Hi, I’m Jenn! I have a weakness for soft, fuzzy things and I hate sitting still with nothing to do.
Those two things may not seem to have much in common, but combining my love of all things soft with the need to have something to do with my hands helped me keep my sanity over 20 years as a military musician. We’re talking long bus rides and plenty of “hurry up and wait” situations where you can’t leave to do something else, but you also don’t have anything active to do for long stints of time.
When I was a kid, I would always have a book to hand and could read for hours on end in a car on family vacations. But, I quickly discovered as an adult that I would get carsick and could no longer turn to a good book to pass the time. Enter my stepmom, who always had a crochet project of some kind in the car on vacations. I would watch her with fascination as she created doilies, angels, blankets and more from nothing but a hook and some yarn. I sat down with her during one of our Saturday homemade pizza nights, and she “hooked” me on crochet (see what I did there, ha!). She taught me how to get started and showed me a couple of basic stitches and then sent me on my way with a simple dishcloth pattern book. From there, the rest is history.
I progressed to scarves and started experimenting with different stitch combinations. Then, I bought my first blanket pattern book. It’s still in the basket, albeit very worn around the edges and there are some pages that are taped back in place. It is a well loved book for sure!
After crocheting for a while, and feeling pretty confident in my abilities, I decided that I wanted to learn how to knit too. So I did what any reasonable person would do and started with a sweater. It was a disaster! But, I learned a lot and eventually met my mother-in-law who set me straight on knitting.
Nowadays, I always have a project in tow – either something small that lives in my purse just in case or a larger tote bag with the latest blanket. I also love teaching others how to knit and crochet and watch them learn and grow as they create their own projects.
When I’m not working on something yarny, you can find me spending time in the kitchen cooking or baking goodies to share with my family and friends. Comfort foods are favorites around here and chocolate is one of the food groups in my house. Swapping recipes and tips with friends always brings me joy, and I can’t wait for you try some of my favorites!
If you’re ready to learn, come join me on a yarn adventure (and let’s eat some tasty food along the way)!
